M Yarb, Please look at the WorkCycles site where you'll see that we offer our own line of bicycles. We have a dealer in Santa Barbara: http://www.workcycles.com

If you really want a Gazelle I believe there is an importer in Southern California.

We are looking for a tandem bike that we can also put our 95 lb. Lab into so we can all go cruising together on the weekends.

[...] Both Gazelle and Batavus fight each year for supremacy of the market. This usually means Batavus outsells Gazelle by a finite number of bikes per year, or vice versa. And, in fact, most bike stores in Holland carry both brands. But the bike stores in Holland know their market and order their brands accordingly. It is said that Gazelle serves the ‘over age 50′ market, while Batavus serves a younger, demanding, and more sophisticated market. This difference is certainly important and is illustrated by Henry at Henry Work Cycle who is a non-partisan observer of Dutch bike culture. On a recent blog post, Henry comments, [...]

Well, all you people that never got their feet chewed by mum's tartan bike seat and spoke proximity just worsened the odds for the rest of us. My bare baby foot (hated shoes) was mangled pretty badly once - or rather I should say heavily scuffed. It takes a lot to fully mangle a baby in any way at all, they're mostly made of rubber and are surprisingly resilient. I was the baby that tried pretty hard to auto-mangle and beleive me, its harder than the modern media would have you beleive. My foot got all the way through the spokes, and just past the seat stays which is where it got stuck, bringing the bike to a halt. Apart from bruising and some good scuffing to my toe-knuckles and a bit of blood I was good to go. Ok, it hurt like hell, but nothing broken, no permanant disfigurement - made of rubber see?

[...] Henry Workcycles in Amsterdam are builders and retailers of bakfiets, workbikes, and hand-built city bikes. What I find intriguing about WorkCycles (besides their exquisite products) is the fact that owner Henry Cutler is an American expatriate living and working in Amsterdam, building and selling traditional Dutch bicycles. You can read more about his interesting story on his blog, Bakfiets en meer. [...]

Hi Paul,
Thanks very much for your compliments. No, Gazelle doesn't make any bad bikes, but also no great or innovative ones. There's a perception within the industry and amongst the public that Gazelle relies much too heavily on fantastic name recognition and reputation, but of course these gradually erode. Certainly in comparison with their archrival Accel Group (Batavus, Sparta & Koga Miyata) Gazelle is extremely conservative and insular, though the quality of the bikes is similar. I don't have the figures but can only imagine that Gazelle's market share must be shrinking.

In all fairness we've never done any business with Gazelle. However, my guess is that they would make difficult partners for imports to, for example, the USA or Australia. But it can't do any harm to contact them.

Of course if you're contemplating importing Dutch style bikes I'd also like to discuss your interests. This is a substantial and growing part of WorkCycle's business - perhaps we can be of service. You can contact me at henry (at) workcycles (dot) com.

Groeten,
